Responsibilities
Boatswain
Plan and conduct regular quarterdeck meetings.
Provide leadership to all ship meetings and activities.
Provide direction for effective communication.
Share responsibilities of leading ship with petty officers
Know the needs and interests of shipmates.
Control the actions and behavior of ship members.
Set an example for ship members.
Represent Ship 300 at council meetings and program planning conferences.
Participate in council, area and national venturing events.
Consult with individual ship members who have problems, questions, or concerns.
Direct planning of Ship 300 programs.
Work closely with Skipper of Ship 300.
Appoint ship members to serve as activity committee chairs.
Recruit new members into Ship 300.
Boatswain’s Mate for Administration
Take over for the Ship 300’s boatswain when necessary.
Support the ship boatswain and other petty officers in their leadership functions.
Provide leadership to recruiting new members into Ship 300 by:
Coordinating plans for an annual open house to invite new members to join.
Encouraging all ship members to bring new prospects to ship meetings and activities.
Following up with ship members who seem to be losing interest in Ship 300.
Admit new members into the ship. Be sure they are introduced and feel welcome.
Recognize the achievements of ship members.
Conduct opening and closing ceremonies for Ship 300.
Carry out other duties as assigned by the boatswain.
Boatswain’s Mate for Program
Support the boatswain and other petty officers in their leadership functions.
Collect activity ideas from ship members by:
Maintain an activities file of programs, activities, projects, and trips that Ship 300 should do.
Asking ship members what they would like their ship to do.
Surveying ship members on their interests using an interest survey.
Evaluate ship meetings and activities after they take place
Keep Ship 300 schedule up to date and be sure everybody knows what is happening.
Help Activity Chairs plan and conduct successful activities.
Carry out other duties as assigned by the boatswain.
Yeoman
Support the boatswain and other petty officers in their leadership functions.
Keep minutes of quarterdeck meetings and other ship meetings, which include group discussions and plans.
Remind the boatswain and other petty officers of items that they agreed to do.
Keep membership records for Ship 300.
Supervise all Ship 300 correspondence.
Keep all ship members informed about upcoming meetings, activities and projects.
Handle all publicity.
Purser
Support the boatswain and other petty officers in their leadership functions.
Collect, deposit, and account for all money coming to the ship from dues, money-earning projects, or other sources.
Work with the Ship 300 Committee Treasurer to set up a bookkeeping procedure, bank account, and money-handling methods.
Make regular reports at ship quarterdeck meetings and unit meetings of the status of Ship 300’s budget and treasury.
Be sure that expenditures are approved by ship petty officers and Skipper before disbursing funds.
Storekeeper
Support the boatswain and other petty officers in their leadership functions.
Responsible for procuring and maintaining equipment.
Checks in and out all equipment.
Keeps a complete inventory of all equipment.
Crew Leader (Cox’n)
Support the boatswain and other petty officers in their leadership functions.
Each crew leader is responsible for the morale and conduct of the crew.
Leads and inspires by example.
Is familiar with each member’s abilities and interests and helps to train each one.
Trains his or her assistant, assigning responsibilities so that all crewmembers have an opportunity to lead.
Skipper
Is leader of all officers.
Attends quarterdeck, ship and activities meetings.
Provides direct leadership to ship program planning.
Attends ship committee meetings.
Keeps informed.
Shows a personal interest in all members.
Mate
Advises and helps the boatswain’s mate with ceremonies.
Advises and helps the boatswain’s mate recruit new members.
Assists the Skipper as directed.
Assumes the Skipper’s duties in the Skipper’s absence.
The Chartered Organization
The local B.S.A. council grants an annual charter to Concord Yacht Club to operate Ship 300.
All adult leaders must be approved by the Chartered Organization.
The commodore of the Chartered Organization appoints a chartered
organization representative to supervise is scouting unit(s), Ship 300.
The Chartered Organization Representative is a voting member of the BSA
local council and may serve on the Ship Committee as Chair or member.
Ship Committee
Selects and recruits the Skipper and Mates.
Provides facilities for Ship 300 to meet and for activities.
Helps obtain supplies and equipment.
Supervises and audits Ship 300 funds and property.
Conducts an annual program capability inventory.
Maintains liaison with the chartered organization, Concord Yacht Club.
Sees that Ship 300 operates in accordance with the policies and
standards of the Concord Yacht Club and the Boy Scouts of America.
Conducts the annual chartering process.
Follows the annual rechartering procedure.
Prepares necessary forms and conducts the annual report and rechartering meeting.
Plans the charter presentation.
